Private alligator farmers scrape away the rotting vegetation that alligators make their nest from to reveal a "clutch" (the alligator eggs in a nest) of alligator eggs at Lake Miccosukee July 19, 2007. The Jefferson County lake 25 miles east of Tallahassee, Florida was the last stop on a statewide harvesting schedule and yielded 562 eggs to the group. Lake Iamonia, in Leon County, provided 319 fertile eggs earlier in the day for the private alligator farmers licensed to harvest them. Last year 45,770 fertile eggs were collected to hatch and raise for their meat and hides, 18,000 came from Lake Okeechobee alone. This year, the large lake in south Florida yielded no eggs because of the drought.
