Residents inspect the damage after Hurricane Elena churned in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of the Florida panhandle in September 2, 1985. Elena was the first major hurricane of the 1985 season and it's unusual path included a loop and went back and fourth along the Florida panhandle as a category 3 storm heavily damaging the Apalachicola, FL oyster industry. Apalachicola recorded the highest surge and rainfall totals and whatever oyster industry wasn't ruined by Elena was finished off...
